Sassafras Belted Galloway Stud is nestled in the Yarramalong Valley on the Central Coast, one hour north of Sydney City.
We love the serenity and community of the Valley and the rich, fertile soil is perfect for grazing cattle. High rainfall completes the picture to make this the perfect location for realizing our dream - breeding Belties!
BREAKING NEWS
Things are very busy at Sassafras with preperations well underway for our trip to Tasmania. We will be taking three animals down to exhibit at Scottsdale Show 12-13th November. The feature breed is Belted Galloways, so there should be a great turnout and some excellent competition. There are some fantasic bloodlines in Tassie, so we have made arrangements to purchase a Stud heifer in calf while we are away. We leave around 4am and drive down Canberra way to meet up with Greg Stewart and Chris Hart who are also exhibiting. Greg is supplying his truck and we are splitting the costs as feul alone will be expensive, not to mention the price of passage on the boat. Then we drive to Melbourne and must reach the docks by 6pm to embark on the Spirit of Tasmania for the trip across the Bass Strait, which takes 12hrs. Then on to Scottsdale to prepare for the show. Phew! Same thing in reverse on the way home. Wish us luck! :-)
You can now follow us on Facebook! Just search "Sassafras Belted Galloway Stud". Please join our page by clicking "like". You will then be updated on our activities. There are many photo albums on the page including some lovely shots at home on the stud. I am constantly updating the site with more information and photos so it is worth checking back every now and then too. We have 100 odd fans so far and we'd really love to get this number over the 200 mark. Join up and give us a hand! www.facebook.com
Sydney Royal Show was big in 2010 with 6 studs presenting a total of 15 animals for judging. Sassafras exhibited in two classes. Peppercorn Emily Kate in Heifer: 14 & not over 20 mths and Peppercorn Elroy in Bull: 9 & not over 14 mths. Both classes had very strong fields and our animals placed Third in each class. We were very happy with their showing and general presentation and behaviour during the show. We participated in 3 Grand Parades and it was wonderful to hear people commenting on "The Belties" as we passed by. Word is spreading about these beautiful animals and their many attributes! Lots of people showed interest in the cattle sheds and we chatted with families and farmers. We even had a few loyal customers come up and say hello! We are now focused on our trip to Tasmania in November for Scottsdale Show - Feature Breed: Belties!
Maitland Show 2010 is over and Sassafras performed well! We took three exhibits to the show, Peppercorn Ben, our 3 year old Stud Bull, Peppercorn Elroy, an 8 month old Junior Bull and Peppercorn Emily Kate, a 13 month old Junior Heifer. All three animals won their classes. Peppercorn Elroy went on to take out Champion Junior Bull - Belted Galloway. The judge made some very favourable and encouraging comments. We are really looking forward to Sydney Royal in April. It is disappointing that we can not take Ben, as Sydney Royal will only take bulls up to 30 months old. However, we are hoping to fill that gap in the show team with another young bull that shows a lot of promise.
The Sassafras show team are being prepared for their entries into Maitland Show (Belties and solid Galloways are the feature breed) and then on to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. This is an exciting time for us at Sassafras. We have an impressive team this year made up of three animals. All are showing great promise and we can't wait to see them strut their stuff in the show ring. We also really enjoy the chance to have a yarn with people who are interested in getting involved with the breed or who just like to look at the animals. So please drop by and say hello! Maitland is on the 20th of February and we will be at Sydney Royal from the 8th to the 14th of April 2010. As a bonus, our Reserve Champion (Sydney 2009) and residing Stud Bull, Peppercorn Ben will be stepping out of the paddock and back into the ring at Maitland! Come and see him for yourself!
Sassafras win the Creative section in the inaugaral "Yarramalong Valley Spring Festival" 2009 Scarecrow competion! Competition organiser, Paul Salmon said: "The recent Scarecrow competition was a huge success, with some 65 scarecrows being displayed along the valley over a distance of 26km. As this year's competition was the first for the valley, we didn't realise initially how much talent was here and what diversity there would be in the entries." The competition was held to raise funds for the Wyong Creek Hall and local community. Sassafras found the competition really exciting and it was a pleasure to talk to all the people who stopped to admire the Beltie exhibit out the front. The exhibit consisted of a Cow and calf in a post and rail yard with Farmer and daughter scarecrows looking on. There was a wonderful feeling of community spirit and it was a bonus to win our section after the great job Jason did on our exhibit.
